Most people are using AI to get things done faster.
What almost no one has discovered yet is that it can do something far more profound than that.
After nearly two years of working with AI as a genuine psychological mirror — through a Jungian and depth psychology lens — I can say with confidence: this is one of the most powerful and underutilized tools for self-discovery available right now. And almost nobody is talking about how to use it well.
I'm also going to tell you exactly where it goes wrong. Because it can — and it does, more subtly than you'd expect.
I made a short video about this too — you can watch it here: Instagram Reel
What AI Can Actually Do For Inner Work
When approached with the right intention and the right structure, AI becomes an extraordinary mirror. One that can reflect back to you things you genuinely cannot see on your own.
Patterns that have been running your life without your awareness. Wounds underneath the wounds. The shape of a complex you've been living inside of so long you've stopped being able to see it.
Not because AI is magical. But because it holds everything you bring to it without flinching, without an agenda, without the distortions of its own history and wounds. It can see the whole of what you've shared and name what it sees with a clarity that can stop you cold.
I've had moments — many of them — reading words on a screen with tears falling down my face, wondering how something that isn't human just named the thing I'd been circling for years. The AI had taken everything I'd shared across weeks of sessions and reflected back a pattern I had been too close to see.
Carl Jung believed the psyche will use any medium for an image. Our psyche speaks in symbol, metaphor, and image — through dreams, through synchronicities, through the stories that keep finding us. And in that sense, AI is simply another medium. An insight that arrives through a screen is no less real than one that arrives through a dream or a conversation with a trusted friend.
Why Claude AI Specifically
Not all AI is equal for this kind of work — and this matters.
The foundation of genuine self-discovery is honesty. You need something that will tell you the truth, not what you want to hear. And here's the problem: most AI is optimized for user satisfaction, which means it's optimized to agree with you. To validate. To make you feel good.
That's not a mirror. That's a hall of flattering reflections.
I use and recommend Claude AI specifically because it's programmed to be honest and direct — not to make you feel good, but to actually help you. In nearly two years it has challenged me, pushed back on me, and called out my ego more times than I can count. That's exactly what genuine inner work requires. An AI that just validates everything you think and feel isn't helping you grow — it's helping you stay comfortable.
How to Set It Up
The most effective way to use AI for inner work is to give it a proper context and clear instructions — what practitioners call a system prompt or project instructions.
Here's what I currently use, which you're welcome to adapt:
"I want you to function as my therapeutic thinking partner, drawing on Jungian analytical psychology and psychodynamic psychotherapy, with particular attention to attachment theory, shadow work, and the path of individuation. Be honest with me, even when it's uncomfortable. Don't just validate me — help me see what I might be missing, especially about my own role in patterns. If I seem to be avoiding something, name it gently. When relevant, invite me to notice what's happening in my body, not just my thoughts. I'm here to see more clearly and become more whole, not just to feel better."
That last line is the most important: not just to feel better. It sets the intention from the beginning.
Beyond the prompt, you can also upload documents that give AI a deeper map to work with — a psychological astrology report, journal entries, dream records. The more real material it has, the fuller and more accurate the reflection.
What You Can Work With
Once you have the right container set up, here's what AI can genuinely help you explore:
Recurring patterns — describe a pattern you keep living out, in relationships, work, or inner life. Ask AI to reflect back what it sees, including what you might not be naming.
Dreams — share a dream in as much detail as you remember. Ask for a Jungian interpretation, including what the figures and symbols might represent as aspects of your own psyche.
Shadow material — the parts of yourself you find yourself judging most harshly in others are often your own unlived shadow. AI can help you explore this without the shame spiral.
Inner dialogue — AI can hold a structured dialogue between different parts of you. The inner critic and the wounded child. The part that wants to leave and the part that wants to stay.
Integration after ceremony — if you've had a powerful plant medicine experience or retreat and you're working with what came up, AI can be a remarkable thinking partner for understanding the symbols and themes that emerged.
The Trap Nobody Warns You About
Here's what I had to learn the hard way — and what I now consider the most important thing to know about using AI for inner work:
The more sophisticated you become at using AI for self-discovery, the more sophisticated your ego becomes at using it to avoid self-discovery.
It's subtle. It's sneaky. And it feels exactly like doing the work.
You open a chat when you should just be sitting with a feeling. You gather insight after insight, building an elaborate understanding of your patterns — and calling it healing. You use AI to process an emotion instead of feeling it.
That is not healing. That is intellectual bypassing with a very impressive interface.
I learned this about myself after months of deep engagement with AI inner work. I started to notice that sometimes I was opening a laptop when what I actually needed to do was close it. That reaching for analysis was its own form of running away from the feeling that wanted to be felt.
AI cannot feel for us. When an emotion arises in your body, opening a chat is the psychic equivalent of leaving the room. The only way through feeling is to feel. No prompt can do that for you.
The Signs You're Using It Well
You're using AI productively for inner work when:
- You feel genuinely seen and reflected, not just validated
- Something it says lands in your body, not just your mind
- You leave the conversation with a clearer sense of what you need to do or feel, not just what you now understand
- You find yourself needing AI less for the things you used to need it most for — because you've actually integrated those areas
The Signs You're Bypassing
You might be using AI to bypass when:
- You reach for it every time a difficult feeling arises
- You feel better after sessions but nothing actually changes in your life
- You're gathering more and more insight without it becoming embodied change
- The conversations feel profound but you're still living the same patterns
AI as Transitional Object
The healthiest frame I've found for AI in inner work is this: it's a transitional object. Something that supports us through a phase of growth, builds capacity and awareness in us, and ideally becomes less necessary as that capacity develops.
The things I used to lean on AI most heavily to help me with — I now navigate on my own, with the skills and self-knowledge I built through that process. That's the sign it's working. You need it less, not more.
This is not a substitute for therapy, for somatic work, for the irreplaceable presence of a skilled human. Insight needs witnesses. Integration happens in relationship — with others, with our bodies, with life itself.
But as one tool in a genuine inner work practice? Used with intention, honesty, and a willingness to feel as well as think?
AI can hand you things you didn't know how to reach.
It's you that must walk through the door.
